Copenhagen, Denmark, 1926. Einar Wegener and his wife Gerda are a happily married couple and both are artists: he prefers landscapes, while she paints portraits. One day Einar poses for a portrait of Gerda's while wearing a dress, first as a lark and later at a party dressed as a woman. Soon Einar realizes she is in fact a woman and increasingly prefers being Lili. Attempts to cure her situation go nowhere, and her journey of self-discovery ultimately leads to the first-ever sex-change operation.
