For many years, the United States has been trapped in a grueling war, and to boost national morale an annual contest called “The Long Walk” is held. Fifty young men must keep walking at a speed of at least three miles per hour, and after three violations a contestant is eliminated. The last man standing wins a large sum of money and the fulfillment of one wish. Among the participants is Raymond Garraty, who does not hurry to tell the others what he would wish for if he wins.
