Lillian, a high school senior from South Carolina, goes on a class trip to Washington, D.C., but soon breaks away from the group and sets off on her own journey through the capital and the cities and woods of the Eastern seaboard. Along the way, she finds herself in strange bars, wandering the streets, and encountering a wide range of Americans, from the far right to the far left. This phantasmagorical road movie follows her first glimpse of the wider world and hints that the experience may change her forever.
