Killian is a young man who has never left the remote mountains of Huesca, Spain, where he grew up. In 1953, he returns to Fernando Poo in Spanish Guinea, where he was born, to work on a cacao plantation alongside his father and brother. Over the next 20 years, during the troubled days of independence, he comes of age amid love, loss, and hard-won knowledge.
