In 19th-century Massachusetts, with their father away serving in the Civil War, the women of the March family—Marmee and her four daughters—must make their way through genteel poverty, first love, disappointments, and separations. As the sisters grow up, each follows a different path, until Beth's serious illness brings them back together under one roof. At the center of the story is independent Jo, who struggles to find herself and her place in life.
