In the early 1990s, Lee Israel, a biographer with a modicum of writing success, has fallen on hard times largely of her own doing. Facing mounting debts and a fading career, she discovers a market for celebrity memorabilia and turns to forging and selling fake personal letters supposedly written by famous writers and performers. As the scheme grows, she becomes increasingly entangled in fraud and questions whether her talent is being used for art or crime.
