Halley lives with her six-year-old daughter Moonee in a budget motel along a commercial strip catering to Walt Disney World tourists outside Orlando, Florida. While Halley struggles to make ends meet and often resorts to questionable or illegal means, Moonee is left largely to her own devices, roaming the area with neighboring children, causing trouble, and cursing at people around her. The motel manager, Bobby, is patient and sympathetic toward the tenants who have nowhere else to go.
