In a tiny Italian village called Inviolata, time has effectively stopped, and the local peasants are exploited by a tobacco baroness. During a visit from the landowners' family, young aristocrat Tancredi befriends Lazzaro, a kind and ingenuous farm boy. Their relationship sets off a chain of fantastical events that upend the village's way of life and lead to a near-biblical reckoning.
