In 17th-century Tuscany, the devout novice Benedetta Carlini is brought into a convent as a bride for Jesus Christ. Years later, as reports of miracles and visions stir scandal among the sisters, she becomes entangled with Bartolomea, a young woman fleeing abuse, and her forbidden desires and supposed holy signs lead to a dangerous reckoning.
