Carl Mørck and his assistant Assad investigate a chilling discovery in a Copenhagen apartment: three mummified bodies arranged around a dining table. Their search leads them to a long-abandoned girls' institution on the island of Sprogø, where neglect and forced sterilization once took place. As clues point to old abuses with dangerous echoes in the present, they race to stop further murders and attacks.
