Married couple Pete and Ellie Wagner, feeling a void in their marriage, decide to become foster parents. At a foster care center, they are introduced to Lizzie, a teenage girl who refuses to join a new family unless her younger brother and sister can come with her. Pete and Ellie agree to take in all three children, even though they quickly realize the challenges will be far greater than they expected. As they try to build trust and adjust to family life, they must prove to themselves and others that they can be good parents.
