In 2001, Fabrizio Collini, a retired Italian worker who has lived in Germany for 35 years, kills a prominent wealthy industrialist and then turns himself in. His defense is assigned to Caspar Leinen, a young public defender handling his first major trial. The case becomes personal for Caspar, since the victim's granddaughter was once his youthful love, and as he investigates, he uncovers a trail leading to a major judicial scandal in Germany.
